Kohumaru and Backriver

A scenic 40km loop starting and finishing at Mangonui - the perfect place to enjoy a cold beer after your ride.

The first 4km takes you safely away from SH10's 100km/h traffic to reach the quieter Kohumaru Road.

This gravel road begins flat alongside the Oruaiti River through mangroves, passing the Kenana turn-off before transforming into quiet bush with a beautiful stream. Midway, a winding climb reveals expanding views over farmland dotted with cattle and horses. At the top, take a breath and descend via scenic winding roads with panoramic views south and west. Stop at Fairy Dairy for a cold (non-alcoholic) drink, then continue on 6-7km of sealed Oruru Road through farmland with lighter traffic than SH10.

Turn onto Backriver Road, a quiet gravel route with minimal traffic and just one small climb at the start before rolling downhill through windy roads. Finally, rejoin SH10 and return to Mangonui Hotel for your well-deserved cold beverage.
